    Hi Zesties! 🍋

A few months ago I was having some anxiety and uncertainty about my future career path and how am I going to find a good place in the current competitive job market. 🧑🏻‍💻 It got me pretty stressed up till I realised I can amp up my game by starting to build my portfolio!! Hoping to increase my chances of landing a good and decent job. So if you are having the same stress as me, read on to find out how and why you should start having a portfolio!!

    1. Competing with a group of fresh grads after graduating, having a portfolio can help you to stand out from the crowd. It allows employers to set you apart from others when they see your skills and when you have working experience. Instead of telling employers that you are from a good school with all the textbook knowledge, you can show them that there are things you can bring to the table! And of course, if it shows that it will benefit them, you got it!

    2. Plan your timetable strategically to maximise the amount of time you can use to gain experiences. There are many options out there that offers 2-3 days internships or if you are like me, and appreciate flexibility, you can find project-based jobs or gigs! To add on to that, the benefits of getting an internship/project-based work allows you to showcase your skills, practice what you have learnt in school and an opportunity for you to gain some industry knowledge from the companies you are working with! BIG PLUS, you get to add the experience in your portfolio.

    3. ANDDD here’s the real deal, you may ask how I managed to find opportunities to build my portfolio. First off, make yourself findable. Use LinkedIn! Share your portfolio and put examples of your work on the platform. Companies do scout for potential candidates on LinkedIn, so don’t miss out on such opportunities. It’s a great platform to connect with industry experts & network too. Apart from LinkedIn, these days there are other platforms that allow you to find other opportunities too!

For example, Hust! It’s a game-changer for me as it’s a platform where you can find project-based experiences as a student! It even has a function where you can upload your portfolio, allowing companies to scout for you! There’s a bunch of project-based job listings from various industries. It’s easy to filter through them based on your interest and find a suitable task!!
