How & Why You Should Get Paid For Your Content

Recently, I shared some insights into the challenges and realities of being a content creator in Singapore. I discussed payment issues and mentioned that some brands were open to negotiating terms with me 💰 So, today, whether you’re a small or big content creator, I’ll delve into why negotiation is crucial and provide some tips on how to go about it ✨

    ☁️ Why You Should Negotiate:

✅ Payment for apps & storage fee

Creating content often comes with expenses, such as subscription fees for essential apps like the Adobe Suite, InShot, and iCloud storage – and it’s all increasing because of inflation 💸 SO, it's important to negotiate fair compensation to cover these costs.

    ✅ Time spent

Content creation is time-consuming ⏱️ Negotiating helps you recognize and receive compensation for the hours you invest in conceptualizing, shooting, editing, and promoting your content.

    ✅ Market field

One aspect frequently overlooked is the impact of your negotiations on the entire creator community.

During an event, I had a conversation with two fellow creators about fees. We all agreed that while receiving products from brands can be acceptable, it becomes problematic when brands expect an excessive number of posts in return. Such practices not only undervalue your work but also set a precedent that may harm other creators – brands will think it’s okay to continue doing this to other creators. SO, respecting fair compensation practices helps maintain a healthy and equitable market for content creators ✨

    ✅ Life is expensive HAHAH

Okay, in a practical sense, free products can’t pay for food, bills or in my case, my student loans! Unless it’s PR, I think it’s unfair for brands to expect multiple posts/reviews 🥵

✅ Prepare your rate card in advance

As I mentioned in my post, your rate card is important. It is supposed to show the value of your content to the brand. My rate card currently covers three different platforms, and it is further broken down into stats and costs of different types of posts – i.e payment for one carousel or one IG reel.

    ✅ Be polite

Always be polite: thank the brand for the offer, gently decline if they have proposed something that does not align with your rates and then proceed to justify or negotiate your terms.

    ✅ Propose an alternative

This can be in terms of deliverables or fees! Propose what you’re able to deliver and the costs that you think aligns with you.

PLUS, I usually show more grace to brands I like and smaller brands. Honestly, big brands usually have the budget so don’t be afraid to nego.

✅ Accept it if a brand rejects you

TBH, if a brand doesn’t see the value of my work, then I don’t count it as a loss. Most importantly, you should know your worth!!
