Here are just some rules hat we have to abide to when we’re flying!
1️⃣ No make-up! (for guys)
Light make-up is okay as long as the standard SQ steward image is not compromised. To give context, the flight stewards are like more of a side piece to promote the iconic Singapore Girl. There has to be a sense of masculinity to the image. The only make-up item we can use is… Concealer! to cover the blemishes or acne scars. And even for girls, they have to follow a fixed set of colour palettes, for both make-up and nails.
2️⃣ No spectacles!
We are no allowed to wear spectacles when we are serving. You can say that it is for safety where by if the spectacles is broke due to sudden impact, the crew’s vision is compromised. There is also an element of finesse and elegance to not wearing spectacles.
3️⃣ No Braces!
This is probably due to speech. With the braces, there could be a chance of the crew swallowing their words and not enunciate their words clearly. And also again, the image thing. If food get stuck in the braces, that will look kinda bad for the crew.
4️⃣ No coloured hair!
This is probably due to professionalism where the old traditional mindset comes in. I totally disagree but this is also a way for the company to standardise the look of the SQ crew.
5️⃣ No coloured contact lenses!
Just another random fact, they probably don’t want the crew looking funky with blue eyes when they’re clearly asians. Can you imagine having one side of the contact lenses? You will look crazy hahaha. And yet again, one way to standardise the SQ look.
All these 5 facts got something to do with how the cabin crew look, but I guess the reasoning behind them is not just physical looks itself. Something for you to think about the next time you see a SQ cabin crew.
