Crew Culture is a practice/tradition that SQ crew have which are passed down from a long time ago.

    1️⃣ Waiting for other crew

We usually wait for every crew before we move off to the next station or venue be it work or after work. E.g. after passengers disembark, we will wait for everyone before going to immigration. Even after we arrive back in Singapore, we will still wait for everyone to come out before leaving. This is not the same for other Airlines but only Singapore Airlines apparently.

    2️⃣ Offering drinks

You should offer drinks to both passengers and crew that comes to your galley/working area. It is a culture to ask if they want a drink. There are times you will get told off if you don’t offer other crew drinks… Which is ridiculous because they know where are the drinks and they can go get it if they want. But it is also to build a habit of offering drinks to your passengers.

    3️⃣ Eating your meal

This is the same with the drinks offering but for meals you should ask around especially the higher ranking crew what they would like to have. We do have limited choices left and it is a culture to let the seniors pick their preferred meal before you pick yours. And also out of courtesy, I will also inform the other crew know that I am going to have my meal, a way to tell them to cover the cabin for me while I eat.

4️⃣ Going out for meals in overseas

It is old tradition for the most junior crew to plan a dinner/lunch in the overseas station for the crew to have together. Either that or the most junior crew should join the rest of the crew to have a meal together. They say it is a good opportunity to ask questions and know more about the company… But I hate it. It is my own time so do not expect me to spend it with you.

5️⃣ Expected to be studying SQ stuff on your off days.

There are so many manuals and guides for crew to be updated on service procedures, safety, security and more. The weird thing here is that we are expected to be reading up and studying these things when we are not working. There is also this thing called Knowledge Quiz where crew will have to attempt and pass the quiz. During Covid, it became weird because it was no longer about passing the quiz but the number of times you attempt the quiz. There were rumours about crew that did it 100+ times and the company actually encourages it. Yes it is good that you are staying updated and all. But it has become so competitive that you really have to be living, eating and breathing in Singapore Airlines to be good. I guess that is also how you differentiate the top crew from the regular ones. There is another thing that they might not be that good in service but good in knowledge.
