Hey everyone! Thank you for all the love on my previous post 🥺 in this edition, I’ll be sharing some of the gigs I did while I was a #unistudent

    1) Paid shoots

people used to DM me on ig for shoots. At first I did a couple for fun, but I wondered if I could charge for my time. I joined a few telegram groups for side gigs and looked out for postings I was interested in.

This is a pretty good list – please be careful and not link any payment details or endanger yourself! I made sure to ask for the photographer’s Instagram and dm some of the models to ask about them and cross check telegram information. If anyone is withholding information, I would decline. Your safety is more important!

    2) Started my own businesses

I started 2 businesses while I was in uni- both are no longer active because both myself and my partners decided that we weren’t really cut out to run businesses haha but that’s ok! It was a really good experience nonetheless. We learnt everything from accounting to business operations to sales- this really helped us with our professional work today. Also we got to meet quite a number of clients so that’s always good.

    3) Tuition

Probably my least favourite but it was good money. I don’t really have much to say about it! You can sign up for tuition jobs on sites like Many tutors and you’ll get jobs sent to your email/WhatsApp- it’s up to you to take them up!

    4)Freelance writing

My pride and joy🥺 I’ll be creating a more detailed guide in time to come but this was by far the most rewarding one for me. In the photo above, it was my first ever gig with The Hidden Good. I was paid $100 for it and I had to go down to Pan Pacific, interview my subject and write the article. I honed my interview and journalistic skills. The piece was about people with special needs working in Pan Pacific. I continued writing for them consistently for about a year and I’m still writing today. You can actually find me on telum (Pr tool to contact journalists). But hey if you’re ever interested in my work, feel free to reach out! I’ll be happy to share:)

    5) Events

Finally, I used to emcee for small events. This one was for a makeup workshop run by a boutique agency. This was more for networking opportunities!

I think the key to looking for side hustles is to have a long term goal and think of how it can help your future career. More than the sweet cash, all these hustles helped me build up a repository of skills that I still use today in my professional career. In uni, just try new things! As a student, you have plenty of opportunities to fail and people are still super forgiving, so take full advantage of that!

You’ll never know what you can learn and who you’ll meet, so do things that will expand your horizon and think of how you can make money while you’re at it. Thanks for reading!
