    my crocheting journey!

hi everyone! today i wanna share w y’all one of my little hobbies 😝

i picked up crocheting in 2021 after my A levels because it was trending all over tiktok back then and i was super inspired. plus i had so much free time on my hands i thought it would be a great idea to pick up a new skill. i also really wanted to make cute toys for the person i was dating at the time LMAO.

i started off with a beginners tutorial on youtube so that i could familiarise myself with and master basic stitches and patterns and i made scraps and patches until my stitches looked tight and consistent. i also got a crochet hook set from shopee linked here

super worth and affordable because it comes with stitch markers, sewing pins/sticks and a row counter. but the set i got came with wooden hooks which didn’t work well for me so i got metal hooks from those chapulung shops near my hdb!

i also get my yarns from various shopee shops like this and this

the range of colours is quite wide to cater to whatever you’re going to make ~

once i mastered the basic stitches i dived into making little amigurumi because i was so excited to create cute little animals 🐶🐱🐰🐭🐹🐻🐷🐸

they also make cost-free and thoughtful gifts for friends and family that hold effort and sincerity! i slowly progressed to making flower bouquets and larger, more complicated animals like a medium size giraffe that’s currently still in the works 🦒

i use free patterns from instagram and youtube and just follow along. of course there are very popular and more “perfect” patterns you can buy from etsy or other creator shops but for me i prefer to scour social media for free ways out HAHAHA.

this hobby is always an ongoing journey as you learn to make new things and learn new patterns. i don’t think i’ll ever reach the point of making my own patterns mainly because i’m lazy af but i’m contented following tutorials from other creators 😇

i’m still hesitant to start learning to make clothes and bags because it looks like a lot of work but i do plan to start on hats and beanies!! 👒

    SOME TIPS:

    – get a row counter (last slide) so you don’t lose count of how many rows you need to make

    – get familiar with terminology/symbols/short forms for types of stitches — eg. dec means decrease and dc means double crochet

    – start with “no-sew” patterns which means: everything is made in one part instead of needing to make eg. the head and limbs separately from the body and having to assemble and sew them together later

i hope this inspires y’all to pick up crocheting because it’s actually quite simple to learn!! and super rewarding also — but downside is you might run out of patience because it’s q repetitive,, but that’s what makes this hobby so therapeutic 🧘🏻‍♀️

let me know if you would like the links to any of the tutorials shown!!
